On Saturday, January 14th (my due date) at 5:18am I woke up to a small gush of fluid while I was sleeping. I thought that I had peed, but when I got to the bathroom, it didn’t stop. My water had broken. I woke up David and told him that it was time.

David took a quick shower while I got in touch with my mother (to come over) and I got my bag ready. We arrived at the hospital around 6am.

Since my water had broken, I was sent directly to a labor room. I was about 4cm dilated. The nurse (Nancy) asked a lot of questions, and we were on our way.

About an hour after arriving in the labor room, my contractions were getting much more painful. I asked for the epidural, which was such a relief. Not sure I could have done it without.

As I labored, I watched some TV (some sports show talking about the Patriots and the playoff game vs the Broncos to be played that night) and played Words with Friends on my iPhone.

By 11am I was almost fully dilated. Labor was moving very quickly. Before I knew it, the nurse said it was time and a flurry of doctors and nurses arrived. The nurse reminded me how to push, and about 20 minutes later, John had arrived (at 12:05pm)!

Overall it was a great experience. Quick, easy, relatively painless.

NOTE: We didn’t have a name for John until about an hour after birth. The top names were John, Adam, Wes, Derek, Brett, Luke, James… I liked all of our tops, so it was up to David to decide.

About 2 hours after delivery, my nurse was very concerned about my bleeding. It was clotty and much too heavy. The doctor came in a few times and was concerned that there was some tissue left in my uterus. After some manual searching, I was brought to an operating room for a procedure to clean everything out. It was a little scary. There were a lot of people. I was put back on the epidural and oxygen. It took about 20 minutes.

After the procedure, I spiked a fever and my body was chilled. I was brought in to a recovery room and set up with a heated bubble cover. My uterus was very “boggy” and wasn’t contracting. The doctor again was very concerned. I was given all sorts of medications, and the nurses had to very firmly massage my uterus every 15 minutes – to kick start contractions. There were discussions about additional surgery to remove my uterus, and I overheard something about a blood transfusion. It got pretty scary.

Finally around 9pm, I was stabilizing. David was able to visit now and again, but I hadn’t seen John or the rest of my family the whole afternoon. I was sad, but I was also very out of it due to all of the medications. Around 9:30pm, David headed home and the nurses brought me John. I snuggled with him (and did some feedings) until about 2am. At that time, I was moved in to another room where I was supposed to get some rest. Rest was VERY difficult seeing as the nurses had to massage my uterus every 15 minutes throughout the entire night.

Around 8am, the doctor was happy with my progress and my uterus was firm and where it was supposed to be… so I was moved to my actual room by 10am. My family soon arrived and everything was looking up.

I stayed in the hospital until Tuesday.

So my labor and delivery were awesome, but the post-delivery issues were not fun.

Despite my issues, John was/is doing fantastic.

40 Weeks DUE (tomorrow)

Alright, so I’m due to have this baby of mine tomorrow, 1/14. It doesn’t appear that it’s going to happen. I just got back from the doctor, and while everything checked out great, there isn’t too much activity down below. The doctor says I’m about 2cm dilated, 50% effaced – whatever that means. So I’m getting there, but I’m guessing it won’t be tonight.

The doctor said that we could schedule a labor induction next week, Wednesday, 1/18 or we could do an ultrasound that day and schedule the labor induction the following week. I asked about any pros/cons to waiting and he said it really didn’t matter at this point, so I took the labor induction for next week. A light at the end of the tunnel!!!

Sometimes a labor induction progresses things so slowly that it sucks, but I’ll start preparing for that mentally now. I’ll also keep my fingers crossed that it just happens between now and then on its own.

I was late with Julia as well. I did get scheduled for an induction, but she came on her own 2 days prior to the scheduled date. PHEW!

I’m generally feeling great. I have a little bit of swelling in my feet and ankles, but that’s about it.

39 Week Ultrasound Face

At my appointment last Friday, the doctor had me get a quick ultrasound to check on the fluid levels and the baby’s positioning. Here’s a cute face shot… It seems like the little guy might have some hair? Or it’s just a shadow…

39 weeks (tomorrow)

Just got back from the doctor’s office… everything is looking great! I’ve gained about 18 pounds total. My blood pressure is perfect. No swelling. Measuring as expected. The baby’s heartbeat sounds good. Now we just wait…

I’m due next Saturday, January 14. I’ve got my next follow up Friday, January 13. If I have not had the baby by that time, they will most likely schedule an appointment for me to be induced the following week. So the little guy will be here soon whether he likes it or not!

Other notes – I’m feeling really good. Been sleeping fantastic. Have lots of energy. And I’m not having too much trouble moving around.

The Wait

I’ll be 38 weeks on Saturday, 12/31/11… just waiting for the big day now. Generally I’m feeling fantastic. Few complaints. Lots of bathroom breaks at night. Sort of uncomfortable sleeping, but not horrible. Minor feet swelling.

I’m now working from home until the little guy comes, which is nice. My 1.5 hour each way commute was not flying with the doctor – or me.

As far as being ready, the only thing I have to do is unpack and clean the bottles. I’ve got plenty of clothes (thanks to my friend Rachel who gave me her son’s entire wardrobe through 6 months). The crib is all set…

Julia is getting excited. She knew her baby brother was coming after Christmas, so she’s been asking quite a bit. I hope she remains as excited once he’s actually here, LOL. It’ll be interesting establishing new routines for us as a family. We’re very laid back, so I’m anticipating a somewhat easy transition.

Annnnnnd I guess that’s it for now.

Oh, I updated my blog design this morning. I think I’m digging it. The other was too grungy.

36 Weeks (tomorrow)

Just got back from the doctor. Everything is right on track! Baby sounds good. Baby sizing well. However, the doctor says there is NO chance I’m going to make it to my due date of January 14th. Apparently my body is already starting to prep for delivery. My cervix is about half-way softened, and the baby’s head is down. She says it’s only a matter of time, and that after next week I definitely should not be driving in to work – because she thinks he’ll be coming. NOTE: After 37 weeks, the baby is considered full term.
